Platform & instrumentation

Where does the work happen, and how can we see what it is doing?

The idea in one view.

A mission service rests on processing, storage, networks and shared platform services. Instrumentation makes their behavior visible enough to investigate.

Locate the work

Processing may run at the edge, on premises or in cloud services. Placement depends on the mission, connectivity, resilience and applicable boundaries.

Measure the handoffs

Metrics, logs and traces can reveal waiting, queue growth and errors. Direct instrumentation may need to be supplemented with gateways or synthetic checks.

Separate detection from action

Rules can flag defined conditions. AIOps or AI can help examine patterns and suggest questions. Evidence, evaluation and human authority still govern any response.

Three questions for leadership.

  1. Which measurement would distinguish the likely explanations?
  2. What is normal under the conditions that matter?
  3. Who can investigate, and who may approve a response?

Measure where the work happens; use the evidence to choose the next question.
