Use the same observation to examine the supporting device, transport and processing environment. Measurement helps locate the next question; it does not supply the answer by itself.

Steps in this worked example · not a topology or timing model
Step 1 · Platform & instrumentation
Instrument the source
The device and local process record collection, validation and dispatch events where supported. If direct instrumentation is unavailable, an approved wrapper or synthetic probe can provide a narrower view.
What to notice
What is measured directly, inferred by a probe or still unknown.
The useful question
Where could we collect trustworthy timing evidence without disrupting the service?
Step 2 · Platform & instrumentation
Separate transit from waiting
The team compares buffer occupancy, dispatch time, delivery evidence and processing events. Network counters describe the link; application telemetry describes work the link cannot explain.
What to notice
Queue time, retry behavior, processing time and compatible clocks.
The useful question
Which measurements would distinguish a busy queue from a transport problem?
Step 3 · Platform & instrumentation
Keep analytical methods distinct
A deterministic rule can flag a threshold. A conventional ML model may classify a pattern if evaluated for that task. AIOps may correlate related events; none of these establishes the cause alone.
What to notice
A visible distinction between a rule, an inference and an operational finding.
The useful question
What evidence and evaluation would make each result useful to a reviewer?
Step 4 · Platform & instrumentation
Bound the agent task
An optional agent retrieves approved runbooks and proposes diagnostics using permitted tools. It explains its sources and uncertainty. It does not change the device, network or security controls.
What to notice
Tool permissions, knowledge provenance, output review and a clear stop condition.
The useful question
Which preparatory task could an agent assist with, and who reviews the recommendation?
Step 5 · Platform & instrumentation
Compare before and after
An engineer chooses an authorized test, records the starting conditions and reviews the result. A candidate improvement is judged against the same mission need and operating constraints.
What to notice
A baseline, a repeatable test and evidence that the user-facing concern changed.
The useful question
What result would support the change, and what result would make us reconsider?
The implication
What this helps you see.
Observe the device, path and application together, then evaluate a bounded change.
Keep the limits visible
What the example does not establish.
No telemetry, model or agent is running in this example.
Placement, instrumentation access and tool authorization require environment-specific review.
Public synthetic teaching example · no customer records, client data entry, live AI or performance measurements.
